Gascoigne Family 1939-1998
Willis and Alice Gascoigne became the last family of tenant farmers to reside at Old Moor Farm. Many generations of the Gascoigne family were prominent farmers in the Thurnscoe and Dearne Valley area. They were farming organically from the 1950s , long before it was seen to be important or necessary. It was farming ahead of it’s time on one hand but strangely it was also a farm suspended in time ….. it was not until 1968 that they recieved electricity. The local community were involved farm and it was an annual event for local miners to help with the corn threshing after the harvest. Another annual event was when the local children would earn a little extra spending money helping out with potato picking. Leaving the farm in 1998 was not only the end of the Gascoigne family’s time at Old Moor Farm but also the end signified the end of farming at Old Moor. The family had farmed there for almost 60 years.
